You can experience bird watching at any destination in the mainland and cayes such as BEAUTIFUL Caye Caulker.

Island Birding in Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker is a small island off the coast of Belize, and it’s divided by the Split, which is a narrow channel separating the two masses of land. To the south is the island’s only settlement, known as Caye Caulker Village.

Caye Caulker has a lot to offer to visitors. The surrounding clear, pristine waters and fascinating coral reef attracts visitors from around the world. However, not all the Caye’s treasures are in the water. The south end of the island is home to a dense mangrove forest and diverse birdlife. Although the island is small, there are over 100 species of resident and migratory birds on the island.

With this said, it’s safe to say Caye Caulker is a bird watchers paradise. The mangroves and the littoral forests of the southern end of the island is a great area to go bird watching. We have a self-guided trail through the Caye Caulker Mini Reserve that is along the beach at the southern end of town. You can learn not only about birds there but also about the many native trees and plants.

There are multiple tour operators that offer daily bird watching tours here in Caye Caulker.

These tours usually start from very early morning with slow-paced walks through the forest area at the southern end of the island. During these walks, you can observe the different species of resident and migratory birds which includes warblers, waders, and shorebirds among many others.

Or you can also head to the north of the island and visit the Caye Caulker Forest Reserve with three types of mangroves: white, black, and red. These are natural habitats to turtles and fish and also water birds. So, on a tour of this kind, you’ll be able to witness the spectacular White Herons, Pelicans, Ospreys, Hawks, Falcons, and Frigates. You also can spot The Great Blue Heron, Black Catbird, and the White-Crowned Pigeon, with the two latter listed as Near-Threatened species. Experience this magnificent bird watching on either a boat or kayak.

If your vacation plan doesn’t include bird watching, don’t worry! It only takes a couple of minutes to book this tour and enjoy this incredible experience!
