Known as the “September Celebrations,” this annual event commemorates the country’s independence and showcases the harmonious blend of diverse cultures that make up the nation’s identity. This year marks Belize’s 42nd Independence, and the chosen theme is “𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗜𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱, 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗲𝗱: 𝗕𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲@𝟰𝟮!” From historical parades to lively street parties, Belizeans and visitors alike come together to revel in the spirit of unity, patriotism, and pride.

Carnival Road March

The streets of Belize City come alive during the Carnival Road March, a high-energy parade that takes place in various cities and towns throughout the country. Colorful costumes, feathered headdresses, and vibrant masks are proudly worn by participants who dance to the rhythm of soca, calypso, and punta music. The atmosphere is electric as spectators join the revelry, creating a whirlwind of joy and camaraderie. Belize City’s Carnival will take place on the 9th of September and Corozal’s Carnival will take place on the 16th of September.

St. George’s Caye Day – September 10th

On September 10th Belizeans celebrate St. George’s Caye Day, honouring the historic battle of 1798 when British settlers and their slaves successfully defended the country against Spanish invaders. The locals commemorate this victory with boat races, regattas, and water sports competitions. The sea comes alive with sailboats, canoes, and dories, creating a festive atmosphere along the coast.

Independence Day – September 21st

The pinnacle of Belize’s September Celebrations is Independence Day on September 21st. In 1981, Belize gained independence from British colonial rule, and this significant moment is commemorated with grand ceremonies and festivities. The day starts with the patriotic sounds of the national anthem filling the air as the Belizean flag is proudly hoisted. Families and friends gather to attend parades all around the country, where beautifully decorated floats, high schools and marching bands take center stage. 

Soca Festival

This year will be the 9th annual Soca Fest in Belize City. It is a high-spirited and exhilarating celebration of music, dance, and Caribbean culture. Held annually, this vibrant festival gathers locals and tourists alike to revel in the infectious rhythms of soca music. The event brings together talented musicians, energetic dancers, and passionate enthusiasts from various backgrounds, creating a melting pot of cultures and an electric atmosphere. With its pulsating beats, catchy lyrics, and infectious dance moves, soca music fills the air, and the crowd sways to the infectious tunes. This year’s soca fest will see Beenie Man and Patrice Roberts headlining. There will also be a special international dj set by DJ Ana and Ultra Simmo, with other Belizean artists and djs to be added to the lineup.
